Here is how to add video to a Shopify product page in under a minute: open the product in your admin, go to the Media section, click Upload new, pick your file and save. The video then joins the product gallery, as long as your theme supports video. That route suits most stores.
Three other methods cover the cases it cannot handle: a video already on YouTube or Vimeo, a video placed inside the description, and a video in its own section further down the page. Below you get a table to choose, the steps for each method, the file limits and a list of fixes for when the video refuses to appear. Every limit comes from the Shopify Help Center.
- ✓Your own file? Upload it to the Media section of the product.
- ✓Longer than 10 minutes or over 1 GB? Link it from YouTube or Vimeo.
- ✓No video yet? Generate one from a product photo, then upload the file.
Which method should you choose?
Start from what you want shoppers to see and where the file lives today.
| Your situation | Method | Where the video appears |
|---|---|---|
| You have an .mp4, .mov or .webm file | 1. Upload to Media | Product gallery |
| The video is already on YouTube or Vimeo | 2. Add from URL | Product gallery |
| You want it next to the text that explains a feature | 3. Description embed | Inside the description |
| You want a large video lower on the page | 4. Theme section | Its own section, on every product using that template |
Method 1: how do you upload a video to Shopify?
This is the direct route, with no outside hosting account involved.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Products and click the product.
- In the Media section, click Upload new and choose the file, or drag it into the section.
- To reuse a file you already uploaded, click Select existing instead.
- Save, then open the live product page on your phone to check it.
Shopify's product media page also notes that playback runs at 480p, 720p or 1080p depending on the shopper's connection, so a 4K master will not necessarily play in 4K.
Method 2: how do you add a YouTube or Vimeo video?
In the same Media section, click Select existing, then Add from URL, and paste the link. The video must be viewable from outside its platform, and the address has to follow the format Shopify expects, according to its guide to adding product media:
- YouTube: set the video to Public or Unlisted and use
youtube.com/watch?v=followed by the video ID. Shorts links are not supported, so rewrite them in this form. - Vimeo: allow embedding on external sites and use
vimeo.com/followed by the video ID, not a custom vanity address.
Links from any other host are refused. Embedded videos also escape Shopify's file limits, which makes this the natural choice for a long tutorial.
Method 3: how do you embed a video in the description?
Useful for a short how-to that belongs beside a paragraph of instructions. Shopify's rich text editor page describes these steps:
- Copy the video's URL and paste it into the Page URL box at embedresponsively.com, the tool Shopify recommends, then click Embed.
- Copy everything in the Embed code box.
- Open the product in your admin and click Insert video in the description toolbar.
- Paste the code, click Insert video, then Save.
For YouTube, adding ?rel=0 at the end of the URL inside the code limits related videos to your own channel. On the Brooklyn and Supply themes you can skip Embed Responsively and use the platform's own embed code, since those themes resize videos automatically.
Method 4: how do you add a video section to the page?
Choose this when the video should sit apart from the gallery, for example a full-width demo under the buy button. Which sections you can add depends on your theme, so look for a video section first.
- Go to Online Store and click Edit theme.
- In the Home page drop-down, select a product template.
- In the sidebar, click Add section, search for "video" and fill in its settings.
- Click Save.
A section appears on every product that uses the template. To limit it to one product, build a dedicated template first: in the same drop-down, select the template type and click Create template, then name it and pick the template to copy in Based on. Next, open the product in your admin and select the new template in its Theme template section. It is offered only if it exists in your live theme, as the templates page explains.
Can you add a video from the Shopify app?
Yes, which is handy when you have just filmed on your phone. Tap the Products icon, then the product, then + in the Media section. You can then pick a stored file, film with Camera or paste a YouTube or Vimeo URL. Tap Save when you are done.
What are Shopify's video file limits?
These figures come from two Help Center pages: product media types for each file and adding product media for each store. They apply to uploads only, not to YouTube or Vimeo links.
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| File type | .mp4, .mov or .webm |
| Length per video | Up to 10 minutes |
| Size per video | Up to 1 GB |
| Resolution | Up to 4096 x 2160 px |
| Media per product | 250, all types combined |
| Videos and 3D models per store | Starter, Retail, Basic: 250. Grow: 1,000. Advanced: 5,000. Plus: 50,000. |
| Video storage per store | Starter, Retail, Basic: 50 GB. Grow, Advanced: 500 GB. Plus: 2 TB. |
| New videos per week | 1,000 per store |
Removing a video from a product does not free up space. The file stays in your store until you delete it under Content > Files. Deletion is permanent, and it does not lower your weekly upload count.
Where should the video go in the gallery?
Think twice before you put it first. Shopify uses the first media item as the product's main one, and that item also shows on collection pages, in the cart, at checkout and on your home page. For most stores, the safer order is a sharp photo first and the video second. To reorder, drag items within the Media section.
Choose the content by where it plays. A short silent demo suits the gallery, while a presenter with a voice usually does better in ads. Our guide on how to make a product video has a shot list for both.
Why is your Shopify video not showing?
Start with this table. Each cause and fix comes from Shopify's documentation on product media.
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Video saved in the admin, missing on the page | The theme does not display product videos | Switch to a theme that supports them, or modify yours |
| Video link refused | Private video, or embedding disabled | YouTube: Public or Unlisted. Vimeo: allow external embeds |
| YouTube Short rejected | Shorts URL format | Rewrite it as a standard watch URL |
| File arrives with no thumbnail | Extension changed by hand, such as .mov renamed .mp4 | Convert the file properly, then upload it again |
| Video unavailable for one color or size | Videos cannot be variant media | Show every version in one video, in the gallery or the description |
| Upload refused | Over a file limit or a store limit | Compress or trim it, delete old files, or link from YouTube |
No video yet? Generate one from your product photo
You do not need a shoot to fill this slot. Vuzz starts from one sharp product photo and your site, and an AI presenter can do the job a filmed creator would do for a UGC-style video. You then upload the finished file with method 1.
Vuzz does / You check. Vuzz picks the angle, writes the script, chooses the avatar and voice, then renders the video. You check that the item on screen matches the one you ship, that each claim is true, and that the avatar presents the product without acting as a buyer. The FTC's Endorsement Guides require testimonials to reflect real use, so demonstration is the rule to keep.
The cost appears before each generation. The account is free with no card, and the 72-hour trial costs $1. After that, you move to Growth at $49 a month, with no commitment (see pricing). The AI content generator for e-commerce shows what else it makes for a store, and our walkthrough on turning a product photo into a UGC video covers each step.

FAQ
Can I add my own video without YouTube?
Yes. Click Upload new in the Media section of the product and Shopify hosts the file for you, within the limits of 10 minutes and 1 GB per video.
What video format does Shopify accept?
Uploads must be .mp4, .mov or .webm. Convert anything else with a video tool, because simply renaming the extension can leave you with a generic file and no thumbnail.
Can I use a TikTok or Instagram link?
Not in the Media section, which only takes YouTube and Vimeo URLs. If you own the original file and hold the rights to it, upload it directly.
Can each variant have its own video?
Not as variant media, since Shopify reserves that for images. A simple alternative is one video that shows every color or size, placed in the gallery or the description.
Does adding a video need an app or code?
No. All four methods above work from the Shopify admin. The description embed uses a small piece of generated code, which you paste without having to write anything.
