TikTok Shop ads: how GMV Max works and how to feed it videos

VVuzz Editorial Team ·Published 6 Nov 2026 ·9 min read

TikTok Shop ads are paid campaigns that promote products from your TikTok Shop, so people can buy inside the app. Since July 2025 they all run on one campaign type, GMV Max. You pick the products, set a return target and a daily budget, and TikTok decides which videos to show and where.

Your work moves from ad settings to a steady supply of product videos. Below: how to connect your store, build the campaign and keep the pool full, with AI or with creators.

In short
  • ✓New Shop campaigns use GMV Max: you set products, ROI target and budget.
  • ✓TikTok picks the creative and placement, so your video pool is your main lever.
  • ✓AI videos are allowed if you disclose them and show the real product.

What are TikTok Shop ads, and what changed with GMV Max?

TikTok's help page defines Shop Ads as campaigns built in Ads Manager with the Sales objective, for businesses that have a TikTok Shop. It lists three kinds: Video Shopping Ads, LIVE Shopping Ads, and Product Shopping Ads, which use the images from your product page (source: TikTok, "About TikTok Shop Ads", checked on 4 November 2026).

Those names still appear in many tutorials, but the setup has moved. A notice in TikTok's Help Center says GMV Max is the "default and only supported campaign type" for Shop Ads since July 2025 (source: TikTok, "About Product Shopping Ads").

TikTok's blog describes GMV Max as a single campaign across organic videos, paid ads and affiliate posts. You choose the products or the livestream, then set a return target and a budget. The system steers spend toward the content that sells (source: TikTok for Business, "GMV Max", May 2026).

Spot an outdated tutorial. If a guide asks you to pick "Video Shopping Ads" in an ad group, it describes the older flow. Compare its steps with the campaign screens below before you follow it.

TikTok Shop ads or regular TikTok ads: which fits your store?

The real question is where you want the sale to happen. Plenty of Shopify brands run both, with different products or goals.

The last row is our reading, not a TikTok rule. Test it against your own margins and customer data. If you stay on the regular route, Spark Ads let you boost organic posts toward your own product pages.

What do you need before your first campaign?

TikTok Shop Academy lists these conditions for a seller creating a Product GMV Max campaign:

  • Your TikTok Shop is connected to your Business Center.
  • The ad account holds GMV Max authorization for that shop.
  • You have Admin or Advertising Manager permission on the shop.
  • Products already in Video Shopping Ads, Product Shopping Ads or another GMV Max campaign are removed, or those campaigns are closed.

Authorization deserves a second look if an agency or a teammate runs ads for you. Only one ad account can request it for a shop at a time, and authorizing a new account ends the campaigns on the old one (source: TikTok, "How to request GMV Max authorization in Business Center").

On Shopify, the path runs through the TikTok sales channel. In your admin, open Settings, then Sales channels, add TikTok from the App Store, and click Connect on the Set up TikTok Shop page. Your store needs a verifiable address under Locations and a visible return policy page, and it must be in a supported country, which includes the United States (source: Shopify Help Center, TikTok setup).

How do you set up TikTok Shop ads in Ads Manager?

Here is the Product GMV Max flow, as TikTok Shop Academy documents it:

  1. Sign in to TikTok Ads Manager and click GMV Max at the top of the dashboard.
  2. Select your TikTok Shop, then click Next.
  3. Click Create GMV Max ads, then Promote products.
  4. Choose Promote all products or +Add product for specific items.
  5. Set an ROI target: the recommended one, or your own.
  6. Set a daily budget, recommended or custom.
  7. Pick a start date and time, then click Publish.

Two details are easy to miss. Promoting all products turns off Video Shopping Ads and Product Shopping Ads across all ad accounts for that shop. And the campaign keeps running after its start time, so put a review date in your calendar (source: TikTok Shop Academy, "How to create a Product GMV Max campaign", dated 19 February 2026).

How should you set the ROI target and the budget?

TikTok suggests a value for both, and that is a fair place to look first. Before accepting it, work out the return you need to break even on each product:

Break-even ROI = 1 ÷ margin after product, shipping and fees.

A worked example with made-up numbers: a product that keeps 40% of its price after those costs breaks even at an ROI of 2.5. A target below your own break-even buys sales that lose money, even when the dashboard looks healthy.

Include creator commissions and coupons in your margin. TikTok says the optimization now accounts for them, so compare its reporting with your own books.

To begin, a short list of products often teaches you more than the whole catalog: pick the ones with stock, a clear demo, and several videos ready. Add more once you know how those behave.

Where do GMV Max videos come from?

This is the part you control most, so it deserves most of your time. Product GMV Max can draw from five sources (source: TikTok, "How to make creative assets available", updated June 2026):

  • your official TikTok account connected to the shop;
  • your TikTok business account connected to the shop;
  • other authorized accounts in your Business Center;
  • Spark Ads posts authorized in the ad account;
  • affiliate videos, through Affiliate Creatives for Ads.

To count, your own videos need a product anchor. In Shop Creative Hub, filter on "Product ID = N/A" to find the ones missing a link. You can bulk upload up to 50 videos at a time there, and decide whether each one shows on your profile or runs only in ads (source: TikTok Shop Academy, "Increasing creative supply").

TikTok states that GMV Max has no creative minimum. It also says the system explores every creative available, so a wider pool simply gives it more to compare. Variety matters more than count, because TikTok Shop's content policy asks for an original script per video and warns against reposting your own content (source: TikTok Shop Creator and Content Policy Guide).

A simple brief for each hero product is four genuinely different angles:

  • The demo: the product doing its main job, shown in the first seconds.
  • The problem: a daily annoyance, then the fix.
  • The objection: the question buyers ask most, answered on camera.
  • The comparison: the old way against yours, without naming a rival.

For ready-made structures, see these TikTok ad examples with scripts. For shots to film, use this product video shot list. For a weekly routine, read how to scale ads with UGC.

Vuzz does / You check. Vuzz starts from your product photo and site, proposes the angles, writes a separate script for each, and generates vertical videos with a presenter and a voice. You check that the product looks exactly as it does in real life, add the AI label and the product anchor, then post. See how it fits a store on our AI content generator for e-commerce page.

Can AI videos run in TikTok Shop ads?

Yes. AI can replace the creator shoot for these videos. TikTok Shop's US policy says content is not restricted or penalized solely for using AI, as long as it follows the platform's rules (source: TikTok Shop Academy, "AI-Generated Content Restrictions and Requirements", dated 2 September 2026). Three conditions come with it:

  • Disclose it. Fully generated or heavily edited content needs a label: on-screen text, a sticker, a note in the description, or the "AI-generated content" toggle in post settings.
  • Show the real product. AI must not change its size, color, shape or features. Generate from accurate photos and compare the result with the item on your desk.
  • Keep claims true. No invented results, no fake experts, no false endorsements.

If you ever upload an ad straight into Ads Manager, TikTok also lists AI-generated media among its mandatory ad disclaimers, with a dedicated toggle (source: TikTok, "About ad disclaimers").

The FTC adds one more line to hold. Under its Endorsement Guides, a testimonial has to be honest about what its speaker has really used. So your avatar shows how the product works. It never says "I bought this" or poses as a customer.

FAQ

Are TikTok Shop ads the same thing as GMV Max?

Today, in practice, yes for new campaigns with your Shop as the destination. "Shop Ads" is the family name, and GMV Max is the campaign type you create, in a product or LIVE version.

Do I need a TikTok Shop to advertise products on TikTok?

Only for Shop ads. Without one, you can run regular ads that send people to your own store.

Can I choose which videos run?

You decide what enters the pool, and you can add posts or video codes under Manage creatives. The system then allocates delivery among them, so remove from the pool anything you would not want to run.

Do AI UGC videos actually sell?

Some founders doubt it, and the honest answer is that your own data decides. Put AI videos in the pool alongside your other content, then use Creative Hub to see which assets and creators drive sales for each product.
